Former World No.1 Ana Ivanovic continued her appalling poor form by crashing out of Australian Open as early as in the second round on Thursday. She lost 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 to Gisela Dulko of Argentina.
This is her first defeat at Dulko’s hands in three encounters. The 22-year-old Serbian beauty, who did not win a single tournament in 2009, thus failed to make a bright beginning in 2010. After winning the Australian Open title in 2008, her form was on a steady downhill slide and she is currently ranked 21st in the world.
In another upset, merely for the record, former world no. 1 Justine Henin held her nerves to go past fifth-seeded Elena Dementieva 7-5, 7-6. In an absorbing second round match, Henin held off a gritty Dementieva and managed to win the last three points of the tie-breaker. This is her seventh match after making a comeback. She had announced her retirement in 2008 at the peak of her career as world no.
1. the men’s draw, Russia’s Nikholay Davydenko had it relatively easy against Ukrainian qualifier Illya Marchenko, winning the tie 6-3, 6-3, 6-0. He now faces the prospect of locking horns with World No. 1 Roger Federer in the quarter final. |
