With Rafael Nadal backing out citing injuries, the tournament's popularity had taken a hit right at the start. With the crowd favorite Carlos Moya crashing out in round one, there really wasn't much for the enthusiastic crowds to cheer on. In a nutshell, that was Chennai Open 2010, which proves to be big letdown.
When top-class tennis takes a back seat with very few top seeds showing up, the organizers had no option but to bank on entertainment of a different kind. The celebrity match in which actor Surya and the football hero Bhaichung Bhutia’s duo scored a few brownie points over Rohan Bopanna and Mahesh Bhupathi, was the only saving grace which brought the crowds to life for a while.
The winner of the 2009 Chennai Open title Marin Cilic did a ‘la Carlos Moya’ by lifting the 2010 title as well making it two in a row for the Croatian. Currently, ranked 14th in the world rankings, the 21 year old defeated Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in a 2.44-hour-long clash. The final score read 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3). With Wawrinka always coming out as the victor in all the previous instances Cilic had old scores to even out. Though Wawrinka's fitness was a point of concern, the match was a well-fought one right up to the last tie-breaker.
The duo of Granollers M/Ventura won the doubles title against Lu Y/Tipsarevic J in straight sets at 7-5, 6-2. As a crowd favourite and the man Chennai loves most, Carlos Moya, was also felicitated for his 10th Chennai Open appearance.
The sponsors and event managers are not dejected by the turn of events and hope to re-create some of the previous year's magic the next time around
