The news of Hyderabad’s international tennis star Sania Mirza’s break-up with her fiancé and childhood friend Sohrab is as shocking as her engagement last year. In tennis lingo, this is a bewildering back-hand volley down the line that caught everyone on the wrong foot.
The news got its confirmation right from the horse’s mouth. Sania reportedly revealed that she and Sohrab did not find each other compatible ever since they got engaged on July 10, 2008. She refused to be drawn into a deeper dissection by the media and mere said:“We were friends for five years but found ourselves incompatible. I wish Sohrab the best of life.”
Sania’s decision was not a big shock to her family since there were also reportedly not too keen on their marriage. Consequently, Sania’s father Imran Mirza, a realtor and her coach-cum-manager, called it off last week. Sohrab’s family owns Hyderabad’s popular chain of foot joints, the Universal Bakers. The two Mirza families share a traditionally close relationship between them.
Sania’s engagement became one of most high-profile event of last year. It was rumoured then that the Mirzas’ decision to marry off Sania to Sohrab was taken to fulfill the wish of her grand mother.
While this is the news that came out through sources close to Sania family, many others believe it may not be just a decision to let two incompatible youngsters have their way.
